Resolution on Pope Francis’s Encyclical on Climate Change, “Laudato Si”
The Genesis narrative of the global flood of Noah’s day is a biblical account of a climate-change crisis on our planet. “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord” (Gen. 6:5-8).
The Lord saved Noah and his family, the sole survivors aboard the ark that God designed for man’s rescue from the flood’s world-wide destruction. After the waters assuaged and the ark came to rest, God pronounced a covenant on Noah and his descendants regarding future disasters, which He sealed with the sign of the rainbow. That pronouncement said in part, “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease” (Gen. 8:22). God promised that, while the earth remained, a global climate-change crisis would not be a part of His dealings with people.
Generations passed, and the security of that promise was soon forgotten. The unified people of the world in the plain of Shinar decided to build a tower for fear that they would be scattered over the face of the earth (Gen. 11:4). How their project would address their concern is somewhat mysterious, but what is clear is that global unity was deemed necessary to address what was perceived as a global crisis. The God of heaven disapproved, and He confused the languages of mankind, forcing them to divide into nation-states according to His will (v. 9). Ever since, mankind has dreamed of reconstituting the unity of Babel in rebellion against the Lord.
The latest rendition of that dream warns nations today of the global crisis of climate change. Ignorant of the clear promise of the Noahic Covenant, this agenda has promulgated anew a cause that calls for the governments of the world to unite like Babel. The Director of the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication was correct to say, “[Climate change] is the ultimate collective-action problem. . . . It’s going to require state level action, national action and yes, global coordinated action.”
Pope Francis has buoyed efforts for this coordinated global action in his recent encyclical on climate change, “Laudato Si.” In a document that comes to a crescendo with blasphemous praise for Mary as the “Queen of all creation,” the pope claims, “A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system.” His call for global cooperation to address this crisis, like that of the inhabitants of the plain of Shinar in Genesis 11, is a call for more global government: “The establishment of a legal framework which can set clear boundaries and ensure the protection of ecosystems has become indispensable, otherwise the new power structures based on the techno-economic paradigm may overwhelm not only our politics but also freedom and justice.” Nations like our own constitutional republic, with its free-market capitalism, are little more than “new power structures based on the techno-economic paradigm” to this papacy, a threat to global ecosystems, freedom, and justice. The Marxism could not be clearer.
Therefore, the American Council of Christian Churches, at its annual convention, October 20-22, 2015, at Reformation Bible Church, Darlington, MD, remembers the promise of God to Noah: “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease” (Gen. 8:22). We reject the assertion that a scientific consensus exists that can prove that this promise is now null and void. We remember too, that ever since the tower of Babel, global unity has fostered man’s rebellion against God, and global crises have been used to pressure acceptance of this global unity. In the interest of God-ordained national sovereignty, we call on our nation’s leaders to resist this pressure to surrender it. That this pressure now comes from the Roman pontiff is unsurprising to us, who remember the lust of the Roman Babylon throughout her history for global political influence and power. We resolve to obey the call from heaven in the face of this threat, “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues” (Rev. 18:4).
