The Unbiblical Pronouncements of the 221st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA

Resolution against the Unbiblical Pronouncements of the 221st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA

With the nation of Judah on the brink of moral collapse, the prophet Jeremiah warned his countrymen of the coming judgment of their God. “Therefore now thus saith the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain?’” In their flight to destruction, the reply of the men and women of Judah stubbornly persisted in the cause of their demise. They responded to God’s prophet, “As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken unto thee. But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth” (Jer. 44:7-17).

The unbiblical pronouncements of the 221st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA, convened in Detroit, MI, June 14-21, 2014, were similar responses to the clear teachings of the Word of God. Determined to reject the more sure word of prophecy found in the infallible Scripture, this denomination has demonstrated its commitment to make its own opinions the rule of faith and practice.

The Assembly voted to divest itself from three U. S. corporations that are important to the economy of Israel. At a time when this close ally of our nation faces a growing threat from its neighbors who have sworn to destroy her, the PC(USA) has added its voice to the global chorus of those who denounce Israel. Ignoring continuing acts of terrorism against her and the brutality of totalitarian Islamic regimes sworn to her annihilation, the denomination voted to treat the greatest democracy in the Middle East with a disdain that ought to be reserved for the enemies of freedom. In addition to this attack on Israel, the PC(USA)’s General Assembly voted to assault biblical marriage. As recently as 1979, that body had concluded that homosexuality was not a part of God’s design for humankind. In 1996 a Book of Order amendment expressly forbad the ordination of elders unless they abode in the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman or in the chastity of singleness. Only in the last four years have these biblical positions crumbled under the weight of the denomination’s many years of apostasy from the Word of God.

With their latest amendment to the Book of Order redefining marriage from “a civil contract between a woman and a man” to “a unique commitment between two people, traditionally a man and a woman,” the PC(USA) has completed its divestiture from God’s definition of marriage. “And Adam said, ‘This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man.’ Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” (Gen. 2:23-24). With the words of the Judean worshippers of the queen of heaven, the PC(USA) has responded to biblical truth regarding marriage, “As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken unto thee. But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth” (Jer. 44:7-17).

Therefore, the American Council of Christian Churches, at its annual convention, October 21-23, 2014, at the Bible Presbyterian Church of Apollo, PA, renews our call to believing Presbyterians to separate from this apostate denomination. “‘Wherefore, come out from among them, and be ye separate,’ saith the Lord, ‘and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters,’ saith the Lord Almighty” (2 Cor. 6:17-18). We warn the people of the PC(USA) that many of their leaders are “false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no marvel, for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (2 Cor. 11:13-14). And on the authority of the Word of God we cry against this arrogant rejection of the biblical truth that marriage is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman designed by God for the good of His creatures.
